Collaboration, Talent, and Innovation Drive Portugal's Semiconductor Ambitions

Around one hundred participants gathered on 14 October at Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Centro Ciência Viva, for the POEMS Strategic Dialogue on Semiconductors in Portugal – a day filled with lively discussions and forward-looking insights into Portugal’s growing role in Europe’s semiconductor landscape.

The event brought together representatives from research institutions, startups, industry, and government. The morning session started with an overview of POEMS’ goals and a panel on talent and skills. Speakers agreed that inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists is crucial to ensuring Portugal’s long-term competitiveness in microelectronics and semiconductors.

The afternoon spotlighted European initiatives under the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU), featuring presentations from the EU Chips Design Platform, the NanoIC, the PIXEurope, and the APECS Pilot Lines. Together, these initiatives present valuable opportunities for Portuguese startups and SMEs to access advanced infrastructure and accelerate innovation.

Industry associations called for stronger industry input in EU policymaking, while Portuguese companies showcased the country’s technical expertise, creative talent, and culture of innovation – all vital assets in attracting investment and forging new partnerships.

As the event ended, there was a shared sense of momentum. Participants agreed that Portugal has the skills, ambition, and collaborative spirit needed to become a key player in Europe’s semiconductor future.
